Dear Clients of the Robyn Buntin Gallery,
Some few of you are people whom I have known for a long time, but for the most part I am an unknown quantity, that is unless you have lived in Tokyo sometime during the past 40 years. It is for this long time that I have been the leading dealer of Clifton Karhu (1927-2007) and Toko Shinoda (b.1913 – still going strong.) My Tokyo gallery has handled both artists fully for such a long time with exhibits all around the world.
Having arranged a different life style from others, we have held small and large exhibits showcasing the works of these two well known and collected artists. We have made them well known names all over the world. This year in Tokyo and many other places we have shown the last pieces of Mr.Karhu buying the remnants of his estate from his widow. In the case of Shinoda-san who is remarkably agile, able, and active, we have done regular shows, one of which is now on at the Conrad Hotel in Tokyo, an event that was suddenly achieved; our gallery accepted a sudden offer.
Before much of this happened I had already arranged to rent a house in Kailua and have invited a few dozen friends to come and go in Hawaii during the year end. In discussing our month long visit to Hawaii the idea of a “just before Christmas show” to give everyone a chance to redeem his last minute Christmas shopping occurred. Out of this idea we settled on a few days of Shinoda/Karhu, Presents for Christmas, and yourself,” at the Robyn Buntin Gallery. This means that on December 12-13-14-15-16 members of the Tolman Collection of Tokyo will be on hand to tell you about these two artists, and perhaps fill a hole in your Christmas present list, or even find something that will brighten up your own collection.
Even if you don’t find anything you want to take away with you, for yourself, or to present to others, we will be happy to meet you – either again or for the first time. During that hectic time just before Chrismas we hope you can find the time to drop in and say hello.
If we can’t say it in person, Merry Christmas from The Tolman Collection, Tokyo.
December 12 to 16, 2016
Special exhibition – just in time to buy a present for the holidays for someone you may have forgotten …yourself?
Clifton Karhu (1927 -2007) and Toko Shinoda (b.1913) internationally known and collected, are the two main pillars of the Tolman Collection, the well-known Tokyo gallery. This year, the owners and staff have arranged to be in Honolulu for their year-end break and decided to hold a one week exhibition of these two famous artists.
Shinoda’s works are to be found in major art collections throughout the world. Her elegant, distinctive compositions, instantly recognizable, form the central point of many collections, both private and public. Mr. Karhu’s woodblocks quickly bring smiles of affection for “the Japan that may not always be here.” He had the skill and talent to make common places seem special, and special places seem out of this world.
The Tolman Collection has shown both artists all around the world. This specially-arranged exhibit showcasing both artists’ accomplishments should be seen. In it,perhaps you will find something for that hard-to-please person on your gift list.
